Red giant depletion in globular cluster cores

چکیده
We investigate the observed depletion of red giants in the cores of post-core-collapse globular clusters. In particular, the evolutionary scenario we consider is a binary consisting of two lowmass stars which undergoes two common-envelope phases. The first common-envelope phase occurs when the primary is a red giant resulting in a helium white dwarf and main-sequence star in a detached binary. The second common-envelope phase occurs shortly after the secondary becomes a red giant. During the second common-envelope phase, the degenerate helium cores merge resulting in a core mass greater than the helium burning limit and the formation of a horizontal branch star. We show that stellar encounters enhance this evolutionary route in post-core-collapse clusters. These encounters increase the population of binary secondaries which would have evolved on to the red giant branch in the recent past.

Stellar Populations in Globular Cluster Cores: Evidence for a Peculiar Trend Among Red Giant Branch Stars
We investigate the relationship between the mass of a globular cluster core and the sizes of its various stellar populations in a sample of 56 globular clusters. The number of core red giant branch stars is found to scale sub-linearly with core mass at the 3-σ confidence level, whereas the relation is linear to within one standard deviation for main-sequence turn-off and sub-giant branch stars....
متن کاملCollisions of Free Floating Planets with Evolved Stars in Globular Clusters
We estimate the rate of collisions between stars and free-floating planets (FFPs) in globular clusters, in particular the collision of FFPs with red giant branch (RGB) stars. Recent dynamical simulations imply that the density of such objects could exceed ∼ 10 pc near the cores of rich globular clusters. We show that in these clusters ∼ 5− 10% of all RGB stars near the core would suffer a colli...
متن کاملNear - Infrared photometry of four metal - rich Bulge globular clusters : NGC 6304 , NGC 6569 , NGC 6637 , NGC 6638 ⋆
We present high-quality near-Infrared photometry of four Bulge metal-rich globular clusters, namely: NGC 6304, NGC 6569, NGC 6637 and NGC 6638. By using the observed Colour-Magnitude Diagrams we derived a photometric estimates of the cluster reddening and distance. We performed a detailed analysis of the Red Giant Branch, presenting a complete description of morphologic parameters and evolution...
متن کاملMass Outflow and Chromospheric Activity of Red Giant Stars in Globular Clusters
High resolution spectra of 110 selected red giant stars in the globular cluster M15 (NGC 7078) were obtained with Hectochelle at the MMT telescope in 2005 May, 2006 May, and 2006 October. Echelle orders containing Hα and Ca II H & K are used to identify emission and line asymmetries characterizing motions in the extended atmospheres. Emission in Hα is detected to a luminosity of log(L/L⊙) = 2.3...
متن کاملEllipticals with Kinematically–Distinct Cores: WFPC2 Imaging of Globular Clusters
New globular clusters may form in the merger of two galaxies. Perhaps the best examples of merger remnants are the set of ellipticals with kinematically–distinct cores. Here we present HST WFPC2 imaging of 14 kinematically–distinct core ellipticals to examine their globular cluster systems. In particular, we probe the galaxy central regions, for which we might expect to see the strongest signat...
